A translation that is technically word-for-word correct can still be commercially damaging if it sounds wrong to a native speaker, misses a regulatory requirement, or carries the wrong cultural connotations.

For marketing content, legal documents, medical information, product labelling, or anything that represents your brand to a new market, raw AI output simply is not good enough. It requires expert human review, post-editing, and quality assurance to be fit for purpose.

But interpreting is fundamentally a human skill. It requires simultaneous processing of tone, register, cultural context, non-verbal cues, and the ability to manage fast-changing, emotionally charged conversations. In a legal hearing, a medical consultation, a business negotiation, or a safeguarding interview, the stakes are too high to rely on technology that cannot read the room.

Professional interpreters do not simply convert words from one language into another. They navigate complex human dynamics in real time. That is a capability that AI tools, at present, cannot replicate reliably or ethically in high-stakes settings.

If you are a business commissioning translation or interpreting services, you are likely to notice AI's presence in a few ways. Turnaround times on some content types may shorten. Costs on high-volume, lower-complexity projects may reduce. More providers will offer AI-assisted services as a lower-cost tier.

What to watch out for: transparency. Not every provider will be upfront about whether your content has been run through a machine and simply checked by a human, or whether it has been handled by a specialist linguist from start to finish. Those are very different things, and they produce very different results.
